Huntyr, Anahliese, Kenadee..

-Aussie-

If you are after quirky or odd sibsets, the Aussie BAs are it.

Oh and bacon (or cookies) for those who can spot the OTT bogan spelling of one name.  The name has been..... thunderstruck!

Note that Charlottes and Jacks have been left out.

Anneliese has been annihilated, again.  This is why I can't stomach the name.

A farm I lived on once was called 'Riverlea'.  No comment on Diesel or Banjo.  Best left unsaid.

The only other Velvets I've seen have been in the Telegraph of all places.

Attack of the Jax- and Kai!

Given Linkin's middle, I'd be extremely curious to know what his brothers' middles are ;)  Pretty sure Regan is a boy. It's overwhelming male in NZ at least. I'm sure it's similar in Aus.  One of my best male friends in primary school was a Regan.  I really fancied him and I'm sure it went the other way too,  but the possibility of transferring 'cooties' got in the way.

Lulu!  Teh cute but Violet and sturdy Eve provide enough gravitas. I like the combo.  Take note Brits, this is how you pull sweet and quirky off without stepping off into this territory:

The dog is most likely a Coco-Tiggysparkle.

I don't have all the details but a work colleague of Jez's lost one of her twins recently.  I believe one was stillborn almost full term.   Such a lovely lady too just given the few times I met her.  These were her first (and only planned) children.  We sold her our cot (given we didn't think we were going to need it any time soon - funny that).  Gah!  Major suckage all round.

Now I'd have thought Montana a relatively uncommon name in Aus (and I'm sure in the grand scheme of things it is). Although, a little venture on to one Australian parenting forum saw one thread with about four parents with children of Montanas/Montannas and multiple people who knew of one.   Colour me surprised.

I see Coco and it just confirms that Dulcie, Sylvie and other so called 'cutesy' names I love don't hold a candle to a pedigree Shih Tzu name like Coco :P

Indianna Margaret has a funky surname.  What happens when you mix red and white?

Grayson blech!

I'm fairly sure Pheric is the Manx Patrick.

The lovely Lewis, Rebecca and then.... what happened?

I'm fairly sure I want to include quirky Juniper as a first middle name.   It's too good to pass up and given my Nan's name, more so.   I love the tree/shrub connection.  Cypress like evergreens rock.  Eccentric, spiky, knotty and hard wearing.   Not all plant names must invoke images of of prissy or dainty wee flowers convenient for putting in vases.  Not that there's much dainty about most roses.   They're terribly high maintenance and unforgivable when being pruned. I should know, my mother helped made me prune hers.

The plants use throughout history is also fascinating. Everything from cleansing temples/places of worship/homes (via burning the wood), diuretics, warding off witches to flavouring gin and flatulence relief ;)

So, I guess I like Juniper's gutsy character and perhaps that's why I find Ivy so appealing too, particularly the sight of creeping ivy overpowering walls, pillars and columns. It's awesome.

For those who are of the "Juniper is NOT a name" opinion, please, by all means continue harbouring the ignorant butthurt.   It's been used as name for hundreds of years.  St Juniper, yes, a man (OMG!), active in the 13th century, is one very notable bearer. St Juniper aside, I figure botanicals are fair game for either sex, it's just a pity that many would be hard to wear (that's putting it lightly) for a male these days. Ivy is one such name I could enjoy on either gender and it's pleasing to know that it was used on males during the 19th century as well as females along with other naturey names now claimed by girls.  If I had the ovaries, and if Jez would let me, I'd like to consider Juniper for a boy's middle too.

[Also, I love the juniper bush/berries scene in Monty Python's Life of Brian. It's fabulous - " Do not tempt Him, shallow ones! Is not the miracle of the juniper bushes enough?!"

Some gorgeous names mixed in.  I love seeing Aoife.  I see plenty of Niamh/Neve here in NZ and in these Aussie BAs, but rarely any Aoife.

Go Emerson's parents!  I've never been a fan of -son  names as first names, but man, you got the right sex.

Alicia/Aleisha/Allicia/Alycia/Allycia/Alecia and so on.  I don't understand the appeal and nor do I want to.

Talia Jade (in various spellings) is an extremely popular pairing in Aus it seems. If not Talia/Tahlia, it's Taylor/Taylah/Tayla.   Jy/e/Jai and Jet/t are representing weekly and like with this selection,  occasionally a Ky/Kye too.

Amity is nice, particularly compared with the standard Grace.  I think it may well see more use.  Like Xanthe, it seems to pop up with more frequency now.

Paityn Kaliope confuses me.

I can't help but like Skye Jean.  Skye is little different to me from Islay, Iona, Arran, Ailsa or even Morven really but so many people think it's a trendified Sky that I tend to pass it over.  Skye Jean is cute and Scottish and I like it. Eat that.

I love the Artie Stephen sibset.  Very cool.  And Artie makes a refreshing change from all the British Archie and Alfies I've seen.  I think Art or Arthur are far too good to pass up though.

It's in bad taste, I admit.

Oh a few NZ Herald BAs.   A bit tame in comparison with the Aussies.

Liam Roland

Ben Robert Wilson
Oliver Michael William
Lachlan Quinn Haydon
Oliver David Campbell
Quinn Alexander Andrew (Jacob)
Benedict Matthew (Laura, Oscar, Rowan, Phoebe) Very impressive!

A rather unfortunate spelling of Anneliese but both twins have the most wonderful surname.  Think Mary + an expensive yellow metal.

Betty is fricking awesome.

Inspired by my Dulcie fanaticism over the last few days, I've grown interested in another name that used to frequent my lists, Sylvie.   Sylvie Juniper. Nice.

Gulliver Peter and Beatrix Hazel-Ann

Another Memphis in a few short days. I linked last post but it's originally a Greek mythological naiad's name, so feminine.

It seems Jed is taking off.  Seriously, I really do wonder if it will be the lower end of the top 100 for Australia, in a few years time.  Ask me last year, I'd have said "Are you kidding?".

I thoroughly dislike Gulliver's  etymology.  Seems like the equivalent of calling your kid 'greedy guts'.  Very quirky is Beatrix and Gulliver together though.

Strike me down again, I rather like Willow and Daisy together.  [Off on a tangent]  Sometimes I get very tired of hearing people harp on about which botanical names are LEGIT!!!! and therefore ACCEPTABLE!!!! and which are not.  Some people are packing far too much butthurt over it.  Daisy, Willow and Clover, for example,  go back just as far as some of the more mainstream florals such as Violet.  In fact, a quick search on ancestry.co.uk and there's plenty Clovers and Willows representing in the 19th century and mostly of the male variety.  In your face snobby name purists. Clover sure is bovine/"moo moo' in a way but to be frank, I find most botanical names, including Rose and Laurel, give me that vibe whether I like them or not.  They just do. Maybe it's their wholesomeness?  That aside, I find nature names some of the most honourable names in the naming pool.  We've used the great outdoors as a source of inspiration for our childrens' names for thousands of years.

I digress.  The legitimate label is a very arbitrary one. A  '"legit name" is a complete misnomer and I hate seeing the term used so willy nilly by some name enthusiasts. It's application is purely subjective and used very inconsistently much of the time.  I have my fair share of silly name hypocrisies but I try to avoid "legitimate" whenever I can.  Although, I'm quite happy to call Nevaeh a complete and utter bastard name if I choose ;) without compromising its very real use and validity today.

Extreme GPs; Tander, Tex and Josie Mo..

I was thinking about guilty pleasures of the extreme kind the other day.  If I was living on a deserted tropical island, lets say with the lovely Willem Dafoe, with no chance of my future children ever having to run into civilisation again (rescue is impossible in this scenario) what names would I use?  And yes, Willem has no say in the matter.

Scarlet Ruby Robin Blythe - for a boy -  well, let's be honest, Scarlet and Ruby were used on both sexes 'back in the day'.  For real.  Blythe still is.  Margaret Mitchell's 1936 Gone with the Wind popularised the occupational surname, Scarlett, on girls so either name is longer flyable on dudes. And Dulcifair Bonny Ladybird Nell for a girl.   Mediocre flow, twee as hell.  Lovely, but still..

And I'm hooked big time on Inigo again.  It's a bit 'posh'.  Pronunciation is a concern.   But it's fun and as close to Iago as I can get.  Jago is too close for comfort.  The English pronunciation sounds like Indigo missing it's D, with the other, you run into awesome Spanish fencer character:

I ♥ Mandy Patinkin.  Couldn't be a better association.  There's the noted Welsh architect, Inigo Jones too.

Alternatives: the Welsh Iolo and Ianto.

Elvy, Leonardo, Iolo, Electra..

-Times and Telegraph -

Offbeat and pomposity abounds.

Dainton Joshua
Theo (Henry, Toby)
Nicholas Finn (Emily)
Iolo Michael Wynne (Dylan, Mair)
Benjamin Michael Adam (Joshua)
Horatio Charles Hugh (Isabella and Hector)

Olivia Ines
Martha Agnes
Helena (Selina)
Molly Myrtle (Milo)
Annabelle Jean Mary
Electra Pearl (Archie, Harmony)

Louis Clifford and Daisy Constance (Lettice)
Stephen Theodore Fox Kensit and Maximilian Marmaduke Charles Kensit.

I think Iolo is a long overdue add on my list.  Fits with Inigo and Ianto.

And yes, Lettice is a real name.  Sorry to disappoint.  It's not the best given it's similarity to lettuce but I greatly prefer it to slimy Leticia.  People use Charlotte even with the HARLOT glaring and sounding out at them.  Anyway,  I doubt many of these kids e.g Horatio and Lettice, in the circles they run, are going to suffer for their names. Still, Jane/Joe Average is still apt to snicker and I can understand why.

Nevaeh strike me down for having a soft spot for Myrtle. It pops up occasionally in these BAs and I can't help but smile.  I'm sure my daughter would never forgive me for  lumping her with Myrtle. Strike that. She'd be eternally pissed.  So, I'm realistic and admire from afar.  I guess as a middle it's liveable.

I will do a personal name post for Babby 3.0 eventually.  I can't summon the passion right now and it's still very early.  Perhaps some time after the first ultrasound.  I don't want to turn this into one of those blogs where every second post is: "These are my favourite names and combinations today!!!!" and "And I'm calling the foetus Mungo Grayskull *cough* this morning!".  That is deathly boring.  I'm keeping the first names secret too which should piss some of you off. Middle names are another story.  Plenty of those to go around and on about.

Humor Me! Old School Actresses.

 ♥

Back to the BAs tomorrow.

I had a fair idea about the original names and careers summaries of some of my favourite old Hollywood stars but a few have proved surprising.   And no, you might find a few powerhouses missing e.g the great Katharine Hepburn.  I had to limit myself and a few e.g the overrated Audrey Hepburn, I care very little for.

Dorothy Lamour  - Mary Leta Dorothy Slaton
According to one site, "the sultry, sarong-wearing sidekick of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby in the popular "Road" movies of the 1940s, '50s and early '60s". J. Edgar Hoover pursued her romantically.  They remained close friends until his death.

Greta Garbo - Greta Lovisa Gustafsson (1905-1990)
This Swedish born and trained actress became a Hollywood powerhouse. In 1954 she received an honorary Academy Award for her talent.

Lana Turner - Julia Jean Mildred Frances Turner (1921-1995)
Lana was married 8 times to 7 different men and very open about her dating and relationships unlike many of her contemporaries.  There was a huge media blitz in 1958  when Turner's 14 year old daughter, Cheryl,  stabbed Lana's then boyfriend in self defence.  The court ruled justifiable homicide.

Betty Grable - Elizabeth Ruth Grable (1916-1973)
She was the number one pin up girl during the Second World War and Grable was considered to have 'the legs' in Hollywood.  They were insured for one million dollars.

Loretta Young - Gretchen Young (1913-2000)

Young once had an affair with a married Clark Gable in 1935 while on location.  She became pregnant and due to the moral climate at the time, spent her pregnancy incognito and returned following her daughters birth claiming she'd adopted her.

Rita Hayworth - Margarita Carmen Cansino  (1918-1987)
Referred to as the "Love Goddess". Speaks for itself.   Father was a talented flamenco dancer and mother a Ziegfield chorus girl.  Rita's grandfather Antonio Cansino was considered one of the founders of flamenco dance and made the bolero famous.  No small wonder Rita Hayworth found dancing easy.  Fred Astaire, who only made two films with her, said that she was his favourite dance partner.  Not Ginger Rogers.

Jean Harlow - Harlean Harlow Carpenter (1911-1337)
I wonder if Harlow name lovers, It's soooo glamorous", would think of Harlean in the same light?  Harlow was the ultimate platinum blonde bombshell.  Interestingly, Jean was first choice for King Kong but lucked out due to her exclusive MGM contract.  Brunette Fay Wray won the part and donned a blonde wig.  Harlow died far too early at 26 from kidney failure.

Joan Crawford - Lucille Fay LeSueur  (1905-1977)
F. Scott. Fitzgerald said of her: “ Joan Crawford is doubtless the best example of the flapper, the girl you see in smart night clubs, gowned to the apex of sophistication, toying iced glasses with a remote, faintly bitter expression, dancing deliciously, laughing a great deal, with wide, hurt eyes. Young things with a talent for living".

Claudette Colbert - Émilie Chauchoin
French born actress well known for her screwball romantic comedy roles.  She won an Academy Award for her role in It Happened One Night, a movie which is considered the first or gold standard of the screwball genre.

Hedy Lamarr - Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler
Austrian born actress and scientist.  She co-invented spread spectrum technology.

Ann Miller - Johnnie Lucille Ann Collier (1923-2004)  Dad wanted a son ;)  Ann frequently went by Annie over Johnnie.    She was discovered by Lucille Ball.  Ann is credited for the popularizing, if not invention, of pantyhose. From IMDb: "On an interview on Turner Classic Movies, she told a story about how each time she needed to dress for a dance on screen, the tops of her stockings needed to be sewn to the costume she was wearing. This was a tedious process and needed to be repeated each time there was a run, etc. One day, she suggested to the man supplying the stockings that he add a top to the stockings so they could be worn as one piece. ...and that's how pantyhose was born."

Theda Bara - Theodosia Burr Goodman. (1885-1955).  One of the earliest sex symbols in film earning her the "Vamp" title.  " Theda Bara is an anagram for Arab death, although that was dreamt up by Fox's publicity department later, when they concocted a fanciful and entirely fictional exotic persona for Bara, who between 1915 and 1919 was one of the three most popular stars in the nascent medium of movies.   In 1917 the Goodman family legally changed its surname to "Bara".    While Fox used the "Arab Death" line, Theda was a childhood nickname of Theodosia and Bara came from Baranger, her mother's maiden name."

Merle Oberon - Estelle Merle Thompson (1911-1979)  Indian born actress of mixed Indian and Welsh heritage.  Fearing her career would be diminished or ruined, Merle fanatically hid her Indian ancestry to such an extent she passed off her Sri Lankan mother as her live in maid. She also claimed she was born and raised in Tasmania, Australia.   A claim debunked after her death.  From Screen Online: "The great pity of her British career is that her near-fatal car crash led to the shutting down of Joseph von Sternberg's production of I, Claudius (1937). It was made the subject of the documentary, The Epic That Never Was (BBC, 1966); the surviving footage suggests that von Sternberg might have done for her what he so signally did for Dietrich."

Vivien Leigh - Vivian Mary Hartley (1913-1967)
Indian born Vivien had bi-polar disorder which seems to have affected her working relationship with others throughout her life.   She was married to Laurence Oliver for 20 years and won the two Best Actress Academy Awards for her potrayal of Scarlett O'Hara in 1939 and Blanche Dubois ( A Streetcar Named Desire) in 1951.

Carole Lombard - Jane Alice Peters
From Wiki "..the highest-paid star in Hollywood in the late 1930s, earning around US$500,000 per year (more than five times the salary of the US President)."  Lombard's second husband was Clark Gable.  She died at 33 in a plane crash which caused her grief stricken husband, Gable, to join the US air force.

Veronica Lake - Constance Frances Marie Ockelman (1922-1973)
Famous for her femme fatale roles and a very reliable box office drawcard although her career never reached the heights of some of her contemporaries thanks to her mental illness and alcoholism. According to her mother she was diagnosed as a child with schizophrenia and it seems she was considered very 'complex' behind the scenes and dubbed "The Bitch" by some. Her on screen surname Lake was a nod to her lovely blue eyes.  By 1952 her career was pretty much over, she'd filed for bankruptcy, divorced her second husband and she'd become a drunk with failing health.  It is said that she died paranoid and destitute. Bette Davis once said that she was "the most beautiful person who ever came to Hollywood ".    And while she popularized the peek-a-boo hairstyle (hair down with one eye alluringly covered - think Jessica Rabbit who is essentially a cartoon version of Lake)  she later encouraged a more practical hairstyle for the working WW2 woman.

Bette Davis - Ruth Elizabeth Davis "Betty" (1908-1989)
Well known for her assertive and perfectionist nature, this tough cookie became the first female president of the Acadmey of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.  She received 10 Academy Award nominations for Best Actress and won twice.  She also the first female to win a Lifetime Achievement award from the American Film Institute.  She was always willing to play 'unsympathetic' characters when other actresses would not.  She was often filmed in close up to show case her dramatic eyes. In 1999, Davis was placed second, behind Katharine Hepburn, on the American Film Institute's list of the greatest female stars of all time.

Jane Russell - Ernestine Jane Geraldine Russell
Made her breakthrough role in a western, The Outlaw, in 1940 which faced huge censorship issues and had a late public release due to her generous cleavage ;) Seriously, her 'untethered' bosoms were considered far too racy for the period.  You can believe that the featured picture made a popular pin up with service men during WW2.  She later seemed to find her element in comedic roles and a notable role was opposite Marilyn Monroe in Gentleman Prefer Blondes.

Other names of interest:

Lauren Bacall - Betty Joan Perske
Barbara Stanwyck - Ruby Katherine Stevens
Mary Pickford - Gladys Louise Smith
Marlene Dietrich - Marie Magdalene Dietrich
Deanna Durbin - Edna Mae DurbinNan's favourite!
Ann Sheridan - Clara Lou Sheridan
Joan Fontaine - Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland - Olivia de Havilland's sister.
Carmen Miranda -Maria do Carmo Miranda da Cunha

Also this link is very interesting.  It features some of the 'unsung'  African American actresses of the old Hollywood era and there were many.  It's criminal that so many of these beautiful and talented women were firmly restricted to the stereotypical black roles e.g servants/mammies or had to stick to the 'black film' genre only.  Very few gained significant roles and if they did, they got overlooked in the annals of movie history.

I lie, there's a lovely one of accomplished Dorothy Dandridge (thanks for the head's up Marshall-Stacks).  A great gallery in that link.

Edit:  Had to add Gene Tierney.

I never thought I'd see an Ingalil!

Ned charms me but I dislike this less savoury association.  Non educated delinquent.  Charming.

I dread Payton/Peyton becoming the new Madison. It's picked to by Laura Wattenberg in the US. Fantastic. I just can see the bogans in Aus and NZ trying out Paetynn, Peytyn, Payetuhn and so on.

And three Matildas!  It's not anywhere near as popular here as it is in Aus so it's still very refreshing to see it.  If you want to up your hipster quotient full score, pair it with Violet.

Nothing quite as interesting as Araminta Tyger Grace this time but what the hey.   And yes, pretty sure Tyger is a familial surname. I've seen it used before.

A Conor and Eoin!  Done right.  ♥

I'm hoping Chole is just a misprint.

I'm surprised Hunter's parents didn't follow the 'theme' and use Huntah.   Then again many Aussie and Kiwi parents seem to think substituting -ah/-uh for -er/-or transforms the name into a feminine spelling.  That aside, boganifications like Coopah, Harpah, Taylah, Tylah, Millah are found on both genders.

Aristotle?  That's ambitious.

I didn't think Kerrington could get any more faux-pompous.  I was wrong.

Always pleased to see Harper on a boy over a girl. I don't get the beastly harpy and fishwife vibe as much.  Some people love to bring up woo filled sparkly nonsense about angels harping mellifluous tunes. Um, no, quite the opposite.  Oops, forgot:  "Oh but it's litttterraaarrry!".  So?

The Booness is strong in Britain.   I guess I best back that up.  Look here (near bottom of post) for just a little taste of some British Boo (+ Bo/Beau/Bow) delight. Boo-Lilly and co.

Hayden is highly unusual for a British girl.  Like Rhys (Reece/Reese) and Rory, it's boy dominated completely.

Aramoana is stunning.  I love it.  Means "pathway to the sea". It's inextricably linked with mass murder here though. I remember the event all too well.

Azaria perplexes me still.  It seems male Biblical names (add an h) are okely dokely on girls these days.  I dislike the name for greatly for either gender as it's monopolised in my head by the the Azaria Chamberlain case aka "a dingo's got my baby" tragedy in Australia.  Yes, it's not just a twisted jokey urban legend.  Incidentally those crass "Dingo Snack" baby onesies and tee-shirts make me hurl. It happened.  Azaria wasn't the first nor the last child to be attacked by dingoes either.

And note to the person searching for specific Kiwi BAs the other day.  Some of the  ones you were after were taken from the Dominion Post which is not placed online so are ungoogleable, sorry.  They only print BAs once in a blue moon.  For some reason Wellingtonians (myself included) don't regularly put notices in the paper. The others are from a publication called The Herald.
