In other news, Appellation Mountain recently did a great post on informal sounding (or not so informal) names ending in that much maligned -ie.   Some good discussion ensued.   As expected, full French monikers such as Julie, Sophie etc.. were unfairly lumped in along with names like Bonnie that have no history as a traditional nickname for any formal choice.

On a tangent now.  What does amuse me is the occasional violent rending of garments over people using Elsie or Maisie as full names but the same people wilfully ignore the diminutive status of many mainstream name nerd favourites such as Juliet and Charlotte or even darling little Gretchen (which is essentially the equivalent of "darling little Greta" ).  There's no real difference to me and if anything the old diminutive endings of -ette/-et/ot/otte will always feel more bunnykins cute than anything -ee can offer up.

Julie will always be more formal than ' suicidal jailbait' Juliet/te (thanks, Bec) and that's onomastic fact ;)  Lump it.

Out of interest, check out some of these older English diminutives.  Many have not survived e.g Barbelot, Charlot (male) and Crestolot (male). It's fascinating.

My first Leonarda spotting.  And a Leonidas too. Wow!

Josephine, when I occasionally see it, more often than not gets paired with Alice.  I've seen it on many a name nerds list (either way around) but only several in BAs over the last few years from memory.

Matilda and Myfanwy!  Didn't think I'd see a Myfanwy in these notices.

Delilah, Tex and Ralph win offbeat sibset this time round. No further comments.

It's humorous seeing my daughter's and my mother's first names together, twice!  I've noticed lots of Margaret middle names lately and look at all the Mar- middles this time.  Marjory is a rare sighting.

I'm never going to be able to get behind Scout as a full name but I begrudgingly admit it could work for Scarlet/t.  Scarlet Eleanor Mary would have been ♥ and I'm not even an Eleanor fan.  I prefer Elanor.

I understand why Ciaran/Ciarán are anglicised to Kieran, it's logical, despite Ciaran really being a no brainer here and in Aus.  However, I will never understand the need to fudge with Megan.  It's Megan.  That is all.  It also astounds me the number of people who think it's Irish!  It's a Welsh diminutive although I wish we said it MEG in here and not the default MEE gin.

Another Gigi mention!  This is what I think of.   Borrowing from Take Our Word For It:

We hear the term gee used in the city as well as the country today, in the form gee-gee, a hypochoristic (baby talk) term for a horse.  Now that we have discussed the word gee, it is probably not difficult to see whence gee-gee came.  The word used to direct a horse simply came to apply to the horse. Children in the early 19th century saw horses on a daily basis, in many cases. The youngest children, just learning to speak, would hear men shouting "Gee!" to their horses, and so they, very logically for children, applied that word to the animal. It became gee-gee after the pattern of other children's words for animals, such as bow-wow for dog and kitty cat for cat, though it was still found as gee alone, as well. The earliest record of the gee-gee usage is 1869, and this one is from 1886: "To carry two heavy boys... on his back, pretending that he was a gee-gee." It was certainly being used as early as the first part of the 19th century, however; it usually takes some time for slang or children's words to find their way into written form.

So when a farmer calls haw and gee to his horses, he is etymologically saying hey and go!

My first non-celeb Zuma spotting.

No idea of Paris' sex.  Beaumont is the mother's maiden name and it's fab.

Because I have boy vibes and I'm curious because NZ stats are small and lacking my favourite boy name (first/middle mix) rankings in England:

Bede  #3147 with 5 born
Ashley #159 with 338 born - not to mention all the double barrelleds.
Rafe #682 with 43 born
Tadhg #1457 with 15 born
Robin #346 with 111 born
Jolyon #2090 with 9 born
Guy #425 with 87 born
Rex #713 with 41 born
Kelly #2494 with 7 born
Finlo - not ranked
Inigo #1594 with 13 born
Iolo #1023 with 25 born
Ianto #2275 with 8 born  - Interestingly (and depressingly) 8 Iagos born also.   The name is handsomeness to the nth degree but, really?  Honest Iago?
Cormac #868 with 31 born
Malachy #526 with 64 born
Kit #724 with 40 born
Bram #3667 with 4 born
Gray #2090 with 8 born
Tudur/Tudor  #4430/2275 with 11 born
Cillian #987 with 26 born

I think that's it. Douglas is a must do middle somewhere.  I like it. I like the Scottish feel.  Perfectly decent but if I had the opportunity I'd dump it or exchange it for Dougray.   The list hasn't changed too much since I was carrying Isla although my top two, Fergus and Oscar have been tossed.  I've said goodbye to Angus and Stirling also.   Thank McDonalds new Angus burgers and an Australian rugby player for those going.  Oh and Jolyon replaces prissy Julian which I'd rather see on a girl although it's the wrong century for that now.

Deciding on the first name is going to be a pernicious bitch I can see it. Middles are easy.  As long as Douglas is there I pretty much have free reign with another one or two.

I wonder what it's like to go throughout life with a pet name like Teddy.  I love many diminutives e.g Polly and Sally but Teddy, like with Dolly, Topsy, Taggy, Bunty, Tiggy etc.. invoke stronger thoughts of childhood toys or bunny rabbits.   I'm sure loads of Teddys and Dollys have done just fine over the many, many years they've been in use,  I'd just want to kill my own parents had I been stuck with Dolly.

I guess I take it on a case by case basis.   Many name nerds can be very hypocritical and/or contentious on the issue.  Juliet/Juliette seems to get a flying pass for a full name but Lucette is too 'cutesy'.   They are both diminutives.  Full forms ending in that -ee sound are also much maligned so Lucy, Sylvie, Julie and so on consistently get the "doesn't age well" treatment which is freaking hilarious.

And repeat after me:  "The botanical names Daisy, Poppy and Lily are FULL names irrespective of my thoughts on them".  Lather, rinse, repeat and then  STFU!

A bona fide 'tryndy' Kiwi namer comment found on a very tiny forum.  Too good bad to pass up.  It takes the cake (or the bacon):

"HI THERE ID THORT ID LET YA KNOW THAT IF ITS DIFFICULT FOR YOU TO NAME A BABY BOY I'D THORT U SHOULD GO WITH A NAME THAT HAS NEVER BEEN USED IN THE WORLD!! HAVING THE ORIGINAL NAME SEEM TOO MUCH AROUND THE WORLD!!! SOMETHING THAT ARE LIKE POPULAR AND FAMOUS AND ALL THAT!!! BUT HERE'S MY ADVISED THAT YOU SHOLD GO WITH A NAME THATS NEVER BEEN USED!!! EXAMPLE BABY NAME : LEGEND,KANYE,DALLION,STORM,LUICUIS, NAZAREITH,,, AND YEAH I NAMED 1 OF MY DORTA AND WANTED A NAME THAT HASN'T BEEN USED OR NEVER HEARD B4. SO HAVE A DORTA AGE 1YEARS OLD AND NAMED HER NAZARENE.; SO GUD LUCK MY FRIEND!!! CHEERS."

My 'advised' is that you learn what original means and never use "dorta" in a post ever again.   Hope that helped!

Phoebe won't be mispronounced by the general masses. Phebee is completely unnecessary!

If you want a 'fresher' middle name, don't go for Mae/May (or even Mai) if you live in Britain.  Mae is the new Grace.  I remember listing several just in one selection recently.

Yup, as mentioned many times here, Regan is male dominated in NZ and found on a variety of ages.  Said REE-gan almost always.

I always thought Felicity and Harriet went really well together.  Nice.  I don't like the additional T though.  Irks in the same way Violett and Scarlett do.

The two Annie and Ruby sibsets make me think of a couple of Victorian domestic servants.  Not negative by any means, I adore Annie, but it's what I think of nevertheless.  They'd probably be working with a Rosie and Daisy;)

And since it's nearing Christmas, I'm wondering how many Natalies/Natalias, Hollys, Ivys etc.. we will see in the upcoming BAs.    Perhaps an actual Christmas even?  I've found a few Christmas mentions on both genders on ancestry.uk going back a 140+ years, my personal favs being Christmas Temple and Christmas Balls.   I can't forget the fictional and impossibly perfect looking Dr Christmas Jones from Bond film, The World is Not Enough either, who must have found her nuclear physics degree in a cereal box or her DD bra.  I have a disgusting and irrational attraction to the name Christmas and this annoys me.

And after my Dulcie and Sylvie kick (which is still very much kicking) I've taken to Nell again.  Nell Juniper.   And I discovered that Jez thinks Ursula is "is okay enough".  No facial contortions or gagging. Promising.  I think that's more to do with Ursula Andress' bikini clad beach entrance in Dr.No. It's not a consideration as a first name because it yields such violent reactions such as "THE SEA WITCH! THE UGLY SEA WITCH!  You can't do that to a child. Disney permeates all childrens' lives.  WHY WON'T ANYBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!".   Yeah, except Ursula was the best thing in that original film. Well, aside from the chef who tried to take out Sebastian.   Ariel was a sap.

Boy names are tough going.   There's only been partial discussion but it looks like the only names we could both agree on fully  at this stage upfront is Bede or Ashley.  I'm still not convinced I love Ashley enough to want to use it as a first name although Bede Ashley Douglas [something short] is rather nice.

Yet another Henry and Scarlett sibset.

I think if folks are looking for a 'safe' and underused Isabel/Isabelle/Isobel (all three top 60!) alternative, Annabelle is not it. Well, at least not in a few years time. For 2008 (England only):

Annabelle #114 - Preferred spelling, rose 22 places.

Annabel    #118 - only risen one spot since 2007.

Anabel and Anabelle sit way back.   Although I've noticed more Annabel/Annabelle, I had expected it to be in the 200's at least.  Consider also that the similar Hannah is #19 and Anna #64 so I question whether Annabelle can get as high as the Isabel- names and still manage to sound 'fresh'.

I'm not sure whether any of the rarer -bel names e.g Mirabel and Rosabel will still sound edgy in a few years.  Given all the Isabel-s, stand alone Belles, Bellas and smushed bel-s, e.g, Lucybelle, Keirabelle and cavity inducing double whammies such as Betsy-Belle, Lola-Belle, Roxie-Belle, Blu-Belle, Bow-Belle, Jolie-Belle, Mimzy-Belle and Lolita-Belle,  it's not likely.  And yes, every single one of those smushed and hyphenated Belles was born in England last year and that's just a tiny, tiny handful of them.  Obviously some parents want their daughters to retain permanent "sparklez" for life.  Download the 2008 England Girl stats from the sidebar if you wish to go looking for more teacup poodle names.

Anneliese has been annihilated, again.  This is why I can't stomach the name.

A farm I lived on once was called 'Riverlea'.  No comment on Diesel or Banjo.  Best left unsaid.

The only other Velvets I've seen have been in the Telegraph of all places.

Attack of the Jax- and Kai!

Given Linkin's middle, I'd be extremely curious to know what his brothers' middles are ;)  Pretty sure Regan is a boy. It's overwhelming male in NZ at least. I'm sure it's similar in Aus.  One of my best male friends in primary school was a Regan.  I really fancied him and I'm sure it went the other way too,  but the possibility of transferring 'cooties' got in the way.

Lulu!  Teh cute but Violet and sturdy Eve provide enough gravitas. I like the combo.  Take note Brits, this is how you pull sweet and quirky off without stepping off into this territory:

Now I'd have thought Montana a relatively uncommon name in Aus (and I'm sure in the grand scheme of things it is). Although, a little venture on to one Australian parenting forum saw one thread with about four parents with children of Montanas/Montannas and multiple people who knew of one.   Colour me surprised.

I see Coco and it just confirms that Dulcie, Sylvie and other so called 'cutesy' names I love don't hold a candle to a pedigree Shih Tzu name like Coco :P

Indianna Margaret has a funky surname.  What happens when you mix red and white?

Grayson blech!

I'm fairly sure Pheric is the Manx Patrick.

The lovely Lewis, Rebecca and then.... what happened?

I'm fairly sure I want to include quirky Juniper as a first middle name.   It's too good to pass up and given my Nan's name, more so.   I love the tree/shrub connection.  Cypress like evergreens rock.  Eccentric, spiky, knotty and hard wearing.   Not all plant names must invoke images of of prissy or dainty wee flowers convenient for putting in vases.  Not that there's much dainty about most roses.   They're terribly high maintenance and unforgivable when being pruned. I should know, my mother helped made me prune hers.

The plants use throughout history is also fascinating. Everything from cleansing temples/places of worship/homes (via burning the wood), diuretics, warding off witches to flavouring gin and flatulence relief ;)

So, I guess I like Juniper's gutsy character and perhaps that's why I find Ivy so appealing too, particularly the sight of creeping ivy overpowering walls, pillars and columns. It's awesome.

For those who are of the "Juniper is NOT a name" opinion, please, by all means continue harbouring the ignorant butthurt.   It's been used as name for hundreds of years.  St Juniper, yes, a man (OMG!), active in the 13th century, is one very notable bearer. St Juniper aside, I figure botanicals are fair game for either sex, it's just a pity that many would be hard to wear (that's putting it lightly) for a male these days. Ivy is one such name I could enjoy on either gender and it's pleasing to know that it was used on males during the 19th century as well as females along with other naturey names now claimed by girls.  If I had the ovaries, and if Jez would let me, I'd like to consider Juniper for a boy's middle too.

[Also, I love the juniper bush/berries scene in Monty Python's Life of Brian. It's fabulous - " Do not tempt Him, shallow ones! Is not the miracle of the juniper bushes enough?!"

Some gorgeous names mixed in.  I love seeing Aoife.  I see plenty of Niamh/Neve here in NZ and in these Aussie BAs, but rarely any Aoife.

Go Emerson's parents!  I've never been a fan of -son  names as first names, but man, you got the right sex.

Alicia/Aleisha/Allicia/Alycia/Allycia/Alecia and so on.  I don't understand the appeal and nor do I want to.

Talia Jade (in various spellings) is an extremely popular pairing in Aus it seems. If not Talia/Tahlia, it's Taylor/Taylah/Tayla.   Jy/e/Jai and Jet/t are representing weekly and like with this selection,  occasionally a Ky/Kye too.

Amity is nice, particularly compared with the standard Grace.  I think it may well see more use.  Like Xanthe, it seems to pop up with more frequency now.

Paityn Kaliope confuses me.

I can't help but like Skye Jean.  Skye is little different to me from Islay, Iona, Arran, Ailsa or even Morven really but so many people think it's a trendified Sky that I tend to pass it over.  Skye Jean is cute and Scottish and I like it. Eat that.

I love the Artie Stephen sibset.  Very cool.  And Artie makes a refreshing change from all the British Archie and Alfies I've seen.  I think Art or Arthur are far too good to pass up though.

It's in bad taste, I admit.

Oh a few NZ Herald BAs.   A bit tame in comparison with the Aussies.

A rather unfortunate spelling of Anneliese but both twins have the most wonderful surname.  Think Mary + an expensive yellow metal.

Betty is fricking awesome.

Inspired by my Dulcie fanaticism over the last few days, I've grown interested in another name that used to frequent my lists, Sylvie.   Sylvie Juniper. Nice.
